Why You Should Play Intramural Sports

Playing sports is a great way to stay in shape and have fun and if you’re looking for an enjoyable way to get active, consider signing up for an intramural league. Intramural sports are recreational leagues offered by universities and other organizations. They offer many different sports options, so you can find one that appeals to you. They’re an excellent opportunity to meet new people and make friends.

In college, I joined our school’s intramural Ultimate Frisbee and met some of my closest friends. I can’t recommend signing up for these leagues enough if you want to meet new people and have fun. They don’t have to be competitive; anyone can sign up and join!

What Are Intramural Sports?

As we said, Intramural sports are a great way to get active and have fun while meeting new people. Teams are typically composed of students, staff, and local community members. The games are officiated by volunteers who work closely with the players to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all involved.

Something that’s been popping up around colleges recently is the addition of intramural eSports leagues. This was fun to interact with new people and bond over favorite games such as Fortnite, Call-of-Duty, Halo, Madden, and other popular titles.

Benefits:

Intramural sports offer many benefits to participants, including the chance to compete in a structured environment, socialize with other athletes, and improve one’s physical fitness. They can also help build character and teach important life lessons such as teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship.

Here are a few reasons why you should play intramural sports:

Reason #1: Stay Fit

Intramural games are often high-intensity so that you can burn plenty of calories in a short amount of time. Playing basketball was another of my go-to intramural sports, and it’s some of the most intense workouts you can have.

But it was fun at the same time, which made it enjoyable. It will improve your cardiovascular health by increasing your heart rate and helping you to manage stress better.

I’ll also mention reducing your risk of unhealthy weight gain by burning calories and helping you to build muscle. I can tell you first hand the freshman 15 is a real thing!

Reason #2: Social Outlet

Playing with a team can help you make new friends and connections. It’s also great to blow off steam after a long day of classes or work. This is a great way to start if you’re looking to get more out of your college experience.

It was nice to play a round of dodgeball or pickup basketball after taking a midterm or finishing up a project I was working on at school. Being at a desk or in a classroom all day can drive you crazy, and doing something fun every now and again is essential.

As for connections, you will play with various people in different majors, backgrounds, and ethnicities. It will help you become more well-rounded as you get acquainted and meet new people.

Reason #3: Develop Your Game

Whether you’re new to a sport or trying to improve your game, intramural leagues offer a level playing field for all players. They offer various sports options, are organized and played on campus, are recreational, and provide an opportunity to improve your skills in a more relaxed setting.

Intramural sports can also help you prepare for competitive sports by giving you experience working as part of a team, dealing with setbacks, and handling victory and defeat. If you’re looking for a fun and rewarding way to stay active, I highly recommend playing!

Conclusion

Overall, playing intramural sports has a lot of benefits that can help students both in their academic life as well as in their social life. If you’re thinking about whether or not to join an intramural team, hopefully, this article has helped show you some of the advantages and convinced you to give it a try!
