About The Houston Rockets Franchise

The Houston Rockets are a professional basketball team based in Houston, Texas. The Rockets compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the league’s Western Conference Southwest Division.

The team was established in 1967 as the San Diego Rockets, an expansion team originally based in San Diego. In 1971, the Rockets moved to Houston. The Rockets would go on to win back-to-back NBA championships in 1994 and 1995, led by franchise great Hakeem Olajuwon. Those were the two years that Michael Jordan decided to play baseball and step away from the NBA.

The Houston Rockets have a long history of intense rivalries, dating back to their days in the ABA. Perhaps their most well-known rivals are the San Antonio Spurs, who they have faced off against in the playoffs numerous times. The two teams have very different styles of play, which often leads to heated battles on the court. The team has also developed a rivalry with the Golden State Warriors, largely because they are often seen as the two best teams in the Western Conference between 2015-2020.

They have retired six jersey numbers, including those of Hakeem Olajuwon, Yao Ming, Clyde Drexler, Elvin Hayes, Calvin Murphy, and Moses Malone.
