About The Baltimore Ravens Franchise

The Baltimore Ravens are a professional American football team based in Baltimore, Maryland. The Ravens compete in the National Football League (NFL) as an American Football Conference (AFC) North division member club. The team plays its home games at M&T Bank Stadium and is headquartered in Owings Mills.

The Ravens were established in 1996 when Art Modell, the Cleveland Browns owner, announced plans to relocate the franchise to Baltimore. As part of a settlement between Modell, the city of Cleveland, and the other NFL owners, Modell was required to leave the Browns’ history and records in Cleveland for a replacement franchise that would be an expansion team.

The name “Ravens” was inspired by Edgar Allan Poe’s poem “The Raven.” chosen in a fan contest that drew 33,288 voters as the entry of strategic branding consultant James Gleason. Poe lived for a time in Baltimore and is buried there. As the team’s logo, Gleason chose a raven in profile clutching a football as inspiration from Poe’s poem and as a reference to the classic film The Raven starring Boris Karloff.

The Ravens have qualified for the NFL playoffs 13 times since 2000, with two Super Bowl victories (Super Bowl XXXV in 2000 and Super Bowl XLVII in 2013), two AFC Championship titles (2000 and 2012), and six AFC North division championships (2003, 2006, 2011, 2012, 2018, 2019). General manager Ozzie Newsome led the Ravens organization from 1996 until his retirement following the 2018 season, and head coach John Harbaugh from 2008 to the present day.
