What Size BMX Bike Do I Need?

What Size BMX Bike Do I Need?

Looking to pick up a new BMX bike? Choosing the right size is essential. Getting one that is too small or too large can lead to an uncomfortable ride, and you won’t be able to perform at your best.

Read on to learn how to determine what size BMX bike you need.

Measuring Your Height and Inseam Length

The two most important measurements for determining your bike size are your height and inseam length. To measure your inseam, stand up straight and place a book between your legs as close as possible to your crotch.

Have someone mark the book at both ends, then measure the distance between the two marks with a ruler or tape measure. This will give you an accurate inseam measurement.

Using Your Measurements

Once you have your measurements, you can use them to match up with a manufacturer’s sizing chart. Most manufacturers will have their own chart; however, there are some general guidelines when it comes to BMX bike sizing.

Generally speaking, a frame size of 20-21 inches for adults should work for heights ranging from 5’4″ – 5’10”, while those over 6′ tall should look into larger frames (21-22 inches). For kids, a 16-inch frame should fit children from 4’6″ – 5’0″. Those under 4’6″ may be better off with a 12-14 inch frame.

Other Considerations

Weight is an important factor; lighter bikes tend to be easier to maneuver and control than heavier ones. Also, consider components such as brakes and gearing; higher-end models will usually have superior features compared with lower-end models. Finally, consider price; more expensive bikes offer better performance but may not always be the best option depending on your needs and budget constraints.

Choosing the right size BMX bike is essential to get the most out of your riding experience. By taking accurate measurements of both your height and inseam length, then comparing those numbers against the manufacturer’s sizing charts, you can find the perfect fit for you or your child’s needs.
