The Growing Sport of Beach Handball
Beach handball has been gaining in popularity around the world and is now a recognized sport, with international tournaments held every year. The sport combines elements of team handball, beach volleyball, and soccer to create an exciting game that is suitable for beaches, sand courts, and other surfaces.
Now let’s take a look at the basics of the sport and why it is becoming more popular around the world.
What Is Beach Handball?
Beach handball is an adaptation of team handball played on sand or other surfaces such as artificial turf. It’s a fast-paced game that requires players to have good physical fitness, technical ability, and strategic thinking. The basic rules are similar to team handball, but the playing field is much smaller, and there are no goalkeepers.
Instead of two teams of seven players each, the game consist of four players plus one goalkeeper (or three players plus one goalkeeper). A match consists of two 20-minute halves with a five-minute halftime break.
Origins Of Beach Handball
Since the late 1980s, beach handball has become a dynamic and fast-paced alternative to traditional team handball. Italian coach Simonetta Montagni originally developed the game, and Luciano Bartolini created the first set of rules in 1990. Despite its relatively recent origins, the sport has already gained popularity worldwide, with tournaments being held in many countries.
The sport is also played internationally, with the first Beach Handball World Championships taking place in 1992. With its exciting blend of team handball and beach volleyball, beach handball is a sport that will continue growing in popularity in the years to come.
How Do You Score Points?
Points are scored when either team successfully passes the ball from one player to another across their opponents’ end line. Each successful pass earns two points for their team. Also, if a player commits a foul or violates any rules during play, the opposing team receives one free point for each violation.
Games must be won by at least two points over the opponent; if both teams have equal points at the end of regulation time, then overtime will be played until one team has secured victory by at least two points.
Equipment Used in Beach Handball
The most important pieces of equipment used in beach handballs are balls specifically made for playing on sand or other surfaces like artificial turf or grass. These balls are typically larger than regular handballs; they also have different levels of grip depending on how much control you want over your passes and shots during play.
Other essential equipment includes goal posts (made out of PVC pipes), nets, and court markers (like cones). Shoes with good grip are also recommended since you will be running around on sand or other slippery surfaces during play.
How Long Are The Games?
A game is divided into two halves, each lasting 20 minutes. So 40 minutes of playing time with a 5-minute break at halftime. If the score is tied at the end of regulation time, there will be a 5-minute overtime period. A shootout will decide the game if the score is still tied at the end of overtime.
What Are The Dimensions Of A Beach Handball Court?
A beach handball court is 27 meters long and 12 meters wide. The goals are 3 meters wide and 2 meters high. The net is placed between the two goals and is 1.5 meters high.
Beach handball is an exciting sport that combines elements from several different sports while providing an opportunity to stay active outdoors in sunny weather. It’s easy to learn, fun to play, and can be enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels – making it perfect for family outings or friendly competitions between friends.
Plus, with its growing popularity worldwide, there are more opportunities to join a league in your area or even compete in international tournaments. I highly suggest giving it a try.
