Where Is Neymar From?

Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior, commonly known as Neymar or Neymar Jr., is a Brazilian professional footballer who plays as a forward for the French club Paris Saint-Germain and the Brazil national team. He is widely considered one of the world’s best players.

Neymar was born in Mogi das Cruzes, São Paulo, to parents Neymar Santos Sr. and Nadine da Silva. He inherited his name from his father, a former footballer who served as his son’s mentor. His mother is of African and Indigenous Brazilian descent. Neymar has a younger sister named Rafaella Beckran, who is also a footballer.

In 2003, Neymar moved with his family to São Vicente, where he began playing for the youth side Portuguesa Santista.

Early Football Career

In 2009, Neymar signed a five-year contract with Santos, the richest professional contract in Brazilian football history. He made his senior debut for Santos in 2010.

He went on to make 185 appearances and score 136 goals for the club, winning two Campeonato Paulista championships, the 2011 Copa Libertadores de América, and the 2011 Recopa Sudamericana. Neymar was twice named the South American Footballer of the Year in 2011 and 2012.

In April 2013, Neymar scored a hat-trick as Santos came from behind to defeat Flamengo 4–3 in the final of the 2013 Taça Guanabara, thus winning their first-ever trophy in the Campeonato Carioca.

Transfer To Barcelona

In August 2013, Neymar moved to Barcelona in a transfer worth €57.1 million, making him one of the most expensive footballers ever. In his debut season with Barcelona, he helped the club win the historic second treble of La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the UEFA Champions League.

Neymar scored 39 goals and provided 19 assists in all competitions that year. The following season, he won the La Liga title. He was part of the triple crown-winning campaign as Barcelona defended their Champions League trophy by defeating Juventus 3–1 in the final.

Move To Paris Saint-Germain

In July 2017, Neymar moved from Barcelona to Paris Saint-Germain in a transfer worth €222 million, making him the most expensive footballer ever. With PSG, he has won two consecutive Ligue 1 titles and helped the club win their first-ever Coupe de la Ligue and Trophee des Champions.

He also scored the winning goal in the 2020 Coupe de la Ligue final. In total, he has scored 49 goals and provided 36 assists in 58 appearances for PSG.

World Cup

Neymar made his senior debut for Brazil in 2010 and has since earned 77 caps and scored 55 goals for his country. He was a member of the Brazilian teams that won gold at the 2012 Summer Olympics and the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup. He also represented Brazil at the 2014 and 2018 FIFA World Cups, winning a bronze medal at the latter.

Sponsorships

With 56 goals in 103 appearances for Brazil, he is the fifth-highest goalscorer for his national team. He was named the South American Footballer of the Year in 2011 and 2012, and he is also one of only two players to win the Olympic Gold Medal and FIFA World Cup (the other being Pelé).

In 2015, he became the first footballer nominated for the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award. Neymar has been featured in commercials for brands such as Nike, Red Bull, EA Sports, and Gillette.
