What Is Academic Decathlon?

The Academic Decathlon is a ten-event scholastic competition for high school students. The events include art, economics, essay writing, literature, mathematics, music, social science, speech, and super quiz. The Academic Decathlon was created in 1968 by Robert Peterson in Orange County, California.

The Academic Decathlon aims to allow all high school students to compete equally. The competition is open to all grades nine through twelve high school students. There are no tryouts or qualifying tests; all that is required is a willingness to work hard and do one’s best.

Levels Of Competition

There are two levels of competition: varsity and junior varsity. The varsity level is for students in grades eleven and twelve. The junior varsity level is for students in grades nine and ten.

There is also a team competition in which eight students compete against each other. Each team must have two members from each grade level, with no more than four members from any one grade.

The events are designed to test the student’s knowledge of various academic disciplines. The events are grouped into art, science, and social science. Each event is worth a certain number of points, and the student with the most points at the end of the competition is declared the winner.

The Academic Decathlon is an excellent way for high school students to challenge themselves academically. It is also a great way for students to meet other students from different schools and backgrounds.

The competition promotes academic excellence and provides an opportunity for all students to shine.

Why It’s Great For Students

The academic decathlon is an intellectually demanding competition that tests student’s knowledge in various academic disciplines. Subjects range from art and literature to math and science, and competitors must be well-versed in all areas to succeed.

The academic decathlon is also physically demanding, requiring students to maintain focus and energy for long periods. The competition can also be nerve-wracking, as it often comes down to the wire. As a result, the academic decathlon is an excellent way to prepare for the rigors of college and the workforce.

Is Academic Decathlon A Sport?

The answer to this question is not simple. There are many different opinions on the matter. However, we can look at the definition of a sport to help us make a decision.

A sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment.

Based on this definition, we can see that it does involve at least some physical activity. The participants must use their bodies to complete the tasks required in each event. They also compete against each other to win.

However, we can also see no physical contact between the participants. This is a key element of many sports, but it is not required for an activity to be considered a sport.

So, based on the definition of a sport, we can say that the academic decathlon is a sport.
