How Long Will Yu Chang Be Out?
On Friday, Red Sox shortstop Yu Chang underwent successful surgery on his left hamate bone. (Team announced)
Chang is anticipated to miss around six weeks after leaving Monday’s game against the Orioles in the 7th inning. Since the injury, Boston has called up Enmanuel Valdez, one of the centerpieces in the Christian Vasquez trade to Houston last season. Though Valdez has certainly hit, his defense leaves much to be desired, recording three errors in 3 games.
Red Sox Will Miss Chang’s Glove
Boston will certainly miss Chang’s glove, where he ranks third among shortstops in DRS (Defensive Runs Saved), just behind Gold Glove winners Javier Baez and Francisco Lindor. After Adam Duvall’s injury, which moved Enrique Hernandez from the infield to the outfield, Chang began to see more playing time.
Revolving Door At Shortstop
Due to Trevor Story’s rehabilitation from elbow surgery, the Red Sox are dealing with a carousel at shortstop.
Chang started 10 of Boston’s previous 12 games at shortstop before getting hurt. In 17 games, including 13 starts, he batted .136 while driving in eight runs and hitting three home runs.
