It’s Duran’s Time To Shine

Another Opportunity For The 25-Year-Old Outfielder

It’s time for Red Sox outfield prospect Jarren Duran to shine. The 25-year-old has been one of the most productive minor league hitters over the past two seasons and will get the start today, batting leadoff.

Duran was drafted in the seventh round of the 2018 MLB Draft out of Long Beach State. He made his pro debut that summer with the Low-A Lowell Spinners, hitting .357/.394/.516 with three home runs in 67 games. He then spent the 2019 season with the High-A Salem and AA Portland, hitting .303/.367/.775 with five home runs in 132 games.

In 2021, he found his power stroke in AAA, hitting a career-best 16 homers and earning a cup of coffee in the big leagues. Though he struggled at the major league level in his short stint, his talent and game-changing speed are still there.

In 2022, Duran has continued to rake in Worchester, hitting .314/.393/.523 with three home runs in 37 games.

With Jackie Bradley on the Bereavement list and Verdugo struggling, Duran has an opportunity to break into the Major League outfield. He could see time in left field or as a fourth outfielder.

I believe Duran’s speed brings an element that could really take the Sox offense to the next level. I’d love to see him bat ninth and use his wheels to create RBI opportunities for Devers, Bogaerts, and Martinez in the middle of the order.

We don’t see speed as often today with the rise of launch angle and hitting the ball in the air. Let’s see Duran put the ball in play and stop trying to be someone he’s not, which is why he struggled at the big league level last season.

Given his minor league track record, it’s only a matter of time before Duran forces his way into the Major League lineup. He has nothing left to prove in the minors and is ready to show what he can do at the highest level. Let’s give the kid a shot.
