How To Properly Throw a Football

Throwing a football is not as easy as it looks. It takes practice, patience, and the proper technique to be successful. Whether you’re looking to throw a perfect spiral or want to learn how to throw a football correctly, this guide will help you do just that.

Step One: Grip the Football Correctly

One of the most important steps in learning how to throw a football is having the correct grip. It can take time and lots of practice to get used to the grip, but it shouldn’t be too difficult once you get the hang of it.

When gripping the ball, ensure your fingers are spread wide, your thumb is placed on one side of the laces, and your index finger is placed on the other. This ensures that your fingers are evenly spread across the laces for better control of where you want to throw the ball. 

Step Two: Align Your Feet with Your Target

How to Throw a Football Harder

Use Proper Mechanics: This means using the right grip, keeping your elbow up, and following through with your arm after you release the ball. If you don’t use proper mechanics, you’ll likely not only underthrow the ball, but you could also injure yourself.

Strengthen Your Arm & Shoulder Muscles: you can do several exercises to help strengthen these muscles, such as dumbbell curls, triceps extensions, and shoulder presses. Doing these exercises regularly will help increase your throwing power.

Use a Lighter Football: If you’re used to throwing a regulation-size football, try using a smaller ball, such as a junior or peewee size. Throwing a lighter ball will help you increase your arm speed, which will help you throw the ball harder.

Practice, Practice, Practice: The more you throw, the better your mechanics will become and the stronger your arm muscles will get. Try to find someone to throw with several times a week so that you can work on your technique and build up your strength.

What Is a Spiral Pass?

A spiral in football is a type of pass where the ball is thrown with a spinning motion. This makes the ball travel further and gives it more accuracy. When throwing a spiral, the quarterback will grip the ball with their fingertips facing upward and their fingers spread wide.
